Off site – Legacies of the Plasticiens. The Musée d’art de Joliette Collection

From June 1 2022 to October 1 2022

About —

This exhibition features twelve paintings produced between 1954 and 1988, from the collection of the Musée d’art de Joliette (MAJ), and brings together twelve artists who are associated with the Plasticiens movement. It is presented in parallel with the exhibition Claude Tousignant : choix libre, on view at the Maison de la culture Marie-Uguay from June 18 to August 12.

The Plasticiens movement, with which Claude Tousignant is associated, marks a key moment in the evolution of painting in Québec. Inspired by their research on non-figurative works in Europe and in the United States, artists sought to paint lines and shapes strictly on the basis of colour and in keeping with the non-representation of reality. Formally initiated in 1955, the Plasticiens movement was recognized for its flat geometric planes and off-centre arrangements within the painting’s pictorial space.

The MAJ is immensely pleased to have been invited to share its collection with new audiences in Montréal as part of this initiative by the Arrondissement Sud-Ouest.
