Edited by Gaëtane Verna

This catalogue is the first publication of its kind since 1971. It is the product of in depth research on the history of the Musée d’art de Joliette and its collection. Undertaken in 2008 by the museum’s staff in collaboration with renowned art historians, the publication makes a significant contribution towards documenting the collection and establishing the salient facts that have shaped its history. Structured chronologically, it tells the story of the collection by listing works as they entered it over time, thus allowing the reader not only to follow the development of the museum as it was moulded by the visions of its different directors, but also to discover, in a very special way, the works it preserves. The catalogue is richly illustrated and is available in both French and English. It contains 120 entries, 2 essays on the history of the MAJ, an essay on the origins of the collection and a detailed chronology of important facts from 1947 to today.

This publication was made possible thanks to a grant in support of permanent exhibitions from the Ministère de la Culture, des Communications et de la Condition féminine du Québec and to the financial support of the Canada Council for the Arts, the City of Joliette, Bridgestone Canada inc. – Usine de Joliette and the members of the Cercle du père Corbeil.
